The Tale of the Candle Maker and the Radiant Island

Some stories stay with us for years. Not because they are complicated. Not because they are famous. But because they carry a truth that somehow finds us exactly when we need it.

Whenever I feel lost, confused, or uncertain about my next step... whenever life seems dark and I cannot clearly see the road ahead... I remember a story I once heard about a candle maker.

And every single time, it reminds me what truly matters. Maybe it will do the same for you.

A simple life above a candle shop

Once upon a time, there was a simple candle maker who lived with his wife above a tiny candle shop in a distant village.

They weren't rich. They weren't poor. They simply lived.

Every day looked exactly like the day before. They made candles. Sold candles. And made more candles. Life was predictable. Comfortable. Safe.

Until one day, an old friend arrived. The kind of friend who always seems to appear carrying adventure in his pocket.

Over dinner, he shared an incredible secret. Far beyond the sea existed an island unlike any other. An island filled with diamonds. Not a few diamonds. Millions of them.

The beaches sparkled with diamonds. The mountains were overflowing with emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and crystals. According to the friend, anyone brave enough to reach the island could become unimaginably wealthy.

Now, the candle maker wasn't particularly interested in becoming rich. His life was simple, and he was perfectly content. But his wife? That was a different story.

The thought of diamonds lit her up more than a thousand candles ever could. And if he was completely honest, he was getting a little tired of listening to her complain about their modest life.

So eventually he agreed. Fine, he said. Let's go find this island. And with that, the adventure began.

The radiant island

After a long and difficult journey, they finally found it. The island was everything they had imagined. And more.

Diamonds covered the beaches like grains of sand. Everywhere they looked, something sparkled. The island felt magical. As if it belonged to another dimension entirely.

The candle maker couldn't believe his eyes. His pockets could be filled with treasures beyond imagination. His future seemed secured. His wife would be thrilled. Everything had worked exactly according to plan.

Or so he thought.

An island without light

As he spent more time on the island, he discovered something fascinating. For all its beauty and wealth, the island had one surprising problem. There was no light. No candles. No lanterns. No one had ever seen a candle before.

And suddenly, the candle maker realized he possessed something valuable. Something the island desperately needed.

Using the skills he had learned his entire life, he began making candles. The islanders were amazed. Soon everyone wanted them.

His candles became famous. Then he became famous. His business grew. His wealth multiplied. His name spread throughout the island. People admired him. Respected him. Celebrated him.

And before he realized it... years had passed.

The return home

One day, he decided it was finally time to return home. When he arrived, his wife nearly fainted from shock. She had long ago assumed he was dead.

She ran toward him, threw her arms around him, and kissed him. Then she asked the question she had been waiting years to ask.

Tell me... were there really diamonds on the island?

Yes, he replied.

Her eyes widened. And did you bring them?

The candle maker froze. His heart sank. For the first time, he realized what had happened. He had forgotten. Completely forgotten.

He had become so busy making candles... so busy building his reputation... so busy enjoying his success... that he had forgotten the reason he went there in the first place.

He had spent years teaching people about light. Yet he had left the diamonds behind.

The story is not really about a candle maker

And this is where the story becomes interesting. Because the story is not really about a candle maker. It is about us. All of us.

The island is life. The candles are everything that keeps us busy.

  • Our careers
  • Our businesses
  • Our money
  • Our status
  • Our achievements
  • Our social media
  • Our endless to-do lists

None of these things are bad. Just like the candle maker's candles weren't bad. In fact, they brought light to others. But they were never the reason he came. The diamonds were.

Tikkun — the reason your soul came here

In Kabbalah, there is a concept called Tikkun. It is the reason your soul came here.

  • Your lessons
  • Your growth
  • Your healing
  • Your transformation
  • Your evolution
  • Your diamonds

And sometimes life has a funny way of distracting us. We become so focused on making money that we forget to become wiser. So focused on success that we forget to become happier. So focused on being loved that we forget to love. So focused on building a life that we forget why we are living it.

And then one day we wake up and realize we've become experts at making candles... but we haven't collected many diamonds.
